On Amatouni nomadic family initiative founder of the Armenian alphabet, Mesrop Mashtots was buried there and his burial is a place of pilgrimage to the present day. Above the grave is St. Mesrop Mashtots church rebuilt by Katholikos George IV in 1875 at the site of the church founded by Vahan Amatouni in 442. Under the apse of the church is the last resting place of Mesrop Mashtots (d. 442).
